Description

Helanthium tenellum (Chain Sword) live plants are native to Central and South America and are a popular, easy-to-care-for foreground plant. This hardy species is suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. As the name “chain sword” suggests, Helanthium tenellum readily propagates by sending out runners, forming a natural carpet effect across the aquarium floor. Features Narrow, grass-like bright green leaves Compact growth, typically reaching 5–15cm in height Strong, adaptable root system that benefits from root zone fertilisers Readily propagates in the aquarium by producing runners, forming chains of new plants Scientific Name Helanthium tenellum Difficulty Easy to keep.  Placement Foreground placement in the aquarium. Helanthium tenellum is ideal for creating a low, natural carpet and prefers open areas with good light penetration. Growth Rate Moderate growth rate. Chain Swords are root feeders and will benefit from a nutrient-rich substrate. Growth can be encouraged with higher lighting and CO₂ supplementation, though CO₂ is not essential. New plantlets can be separated from runners and replanted as desired. Lighting Moderate to high lighting requirements. Under higher light, the plant will remain shorter and spread more densely across the substrate.
