The Best Aquarium Size for Rainbow Mantis Shrimp
A minimum aquarium size of 120 litres is recommended for a single adult Rainbow Mantis Shrimp. A species-only setup is strongly advised. Aquarium Setup for Rainbow Mantis Shrimp
Aquarium Filtration
High-quality marine filtration is essential. A sump system with an efficient protein skimmer is recommended to manage waste and maintain stable water parameters.

Live Rock & Aquascaping
Provide secure live rock structures and PVC burrow inserts beneath the rockwork. Rock must be placed directly on the tank base (not on sand) to prevent collapse from digging activity.
Aquarium Lighting
Moderate marine lighting is sufficient. Extremely intense lighting is not required unless part of a reef system. Adjustable LED lighting allows flexibility and enhances this species’ vibrant colours.
We recommend high-quality LED marine lighting systems for optimal performance and control. Adjustable LED lighting is ideal. Shop adjustable Zetlight LED aquarium lighting.
Aquarium Heating
Maintain stable marine temperatures between 24–26°C using a reliable heater and thermometer. Stability is critical for invertebrate health.
Aquarium Substrate
A deep sand bed of fine marine sand is ideal, allowing natural burrow construction and reducing stress.
A variety of marine Substrates available at Coburg Aquarium.
Aquarium Decorations
Keep décor secure and stable. Avoid lightweight ornaments that may be moved or damaged. Ensure lids are tight-fitting, as Mantis Shrimp are strong and curious.
Important: The Rainbow Mantis Shrimp has an extremely powerful strike capable of breaking shells and potentially cracking thin glass. Always use caution during maintenance and never handle directly.
